Market areas
The M2M market is extremely broad. While many applications are currently discussed it seems likely that vast numbers of new ones will emerge as ubiquitous wireless functionality is provided, in the same manner that the Apps Store enabled vast new applications for mobile phones. Hence, Weightless is deliberately application agnostic, providing an underlying data bearer suitable for the widest range of current and future applications.
Analysts currently segment the M2M market into categories such as:
- Buildings
- Energy
- Consumer and home
- Healthcare
- Industrial
- Transportation
- Retail
- Security
- IT and networks
Of these, it seems likely that Weightless will be deployed soonest in:
- Energy, especially smart metering
- Consumer and home including white goods in the home and more
- Healthcare
- Transportation including automotive engine management and much more
- Retail for point-of-sale terminals, shelf display updating, etc
- Security such as monitoring public infrastructure
The Applications Sub-group within the Weightless SIG is working on each of these areas, developing further insight and interfacing requirements as needed.
