Progress to version 0.7
May 22, 2012The Weightless Specification passed a key milestone earlier in May when it was re-issued as Version 0.7. Although it is very hard to be accurate, broadly the previous version (0.6) was around 80% complete and Version 0.7 takes this to about 85%. We envisage further steps of around 5% through versions 0.8 and 0.9, arriving at a complete Version 1.0 in Q1 of 2013.
The new version confirms that all the key design decisions made in v0.6 are correct and no significant re-writing or change of direction is needed. Instead, v0.7 builds detail in a number of areas. The physical layer chapter now contains detailed information on areas such as synchronisation sequences, spreading codes and other necessary tables. A new security chapter covers requirements and sets out the proposed approach, algorithms and key systems to be adopted in Weightless. Applications material starts to cover how Weightless chips in terminals will interface with the applications running within those terminals. There were also minor enhancements to other chapters, removing errors or ambiguities and adding some minor additional functionality.
The specification is now sufficiently mature to start implementation work – indeed, Neul have been implementing their Weightless chipset for some time now. Work is now underway on a more detailed overhaul of the MAC chapter, a more detailed security chapter and the important accompanying test specification.
