Why the Weightless SIG was formed
The Weightless SIG was formed to coordinate and enable all the activities needed to deliver the Weightless standard. These include:
- Develop an open standard for Weightless
- Manage upgrades to the standard over time
- Administer the IPR policy
- Manage legal disputes as appropriate
- Promote the standard such that it becomes the global standard for M2M communications
- Manage testing, certification and inter-operability
- Provide a forum for influencing regulators to enable white space access
It was decided to form a new body rather than use existing standards bodies. Bluetooth has already demonstrated how successful and rapid this route to standardisation can be.
